The Mjölnir Flap
$70.00
This Interchangeable Flap design is based upon Mjölnir (from the Old Norse, pronounced “MIOL-neer”), a powerful and ancient hammer wielded by the Norse god of thunder, Thor. As the son of Odin the Allfather, Thor wielded his hammer in the manipulation of the heavens as well as the protection of humankind. Due to its power to convey the blessing of the Gods, Mjölnir was adopted by ancient Norse people as a tool of social “forging”: the use of a hammer to honor the marriage of a couple is well-documented in Viking society. Dating to at least the 9th century, Mjölnir was worn by Viking raiders and the people they conquered as a symbol of protection. Pendants featuring variations of the sacred hammer have been found throughout territories within the Viking world, including Scotland.
Of all symbols in the pantheon of Norse mythology, Mjölnir is probably the best known today. Associated with a heady mixture of chaos and consecration, battle and blessing, Mjölnir is a veritable linch-pin between the world of man and the celestial cosmos of the Gods of Asgard. Celtic Leatherworks is proud to honor the significant heritage of this historic symbol in the Mjölnir Interchangeable Flap!
